今日的球迷們，你們還記得馬來寶嗎？在兩聯盟惡鬥時代，許多球員紛紛從中華職棒被挖角至臺灣大聯盟，但馬來寶反而卻從臺灣大聯盟跳槽至中華職棒，這一跳，不僅拿下了1999年的職棒防禦率王，甚至還讓他投到了日本去，成為王柏融在火腿隊的老老老前輩。

在兩年前我和他初次聯絡時，他仍然在棒球場上奮鬥著，還一度詢問我有沒有機會回到臺灣來打球。很高興馬來寶願意接受我的訪問，在去年訪談過他之後，因為各種元素，我一直沒有時間將這篇文章寫出來，到了今天才著手動筆。那麼，我們就來看看這位昔日鯨將如何回味他在臺灣的點點滴滴吧！Q1：距離你在臺灣的時間，已經過了很久，不知道你對臺灣最深刻的印象是什麼呢？Q1: It's a long time since you left Taiwan, what is the impression of Taiwan in your memory?A1：我非常享受在臺灣的日子，環遊這座島，並且到處比賽，暢遊整個臺灣。我們甚至在1997年，到了東海岸去打季後賽。我很想念臺灣，也希望在武漢肺炎之後，能夠再次拜訪臺灣。所有的臺灣球迷都讓我感到驚艷。 A1: I really enjoyed Taiwan. Traveling around the island to play games. Seeing all of the country. We even traveled to the east coast side of the island for the playoffs in 1997. I miss Taiwan and hope to visit back there after all the Covid situation is over. All the Taiwan baseball fans are amazing.

In 1999 I went to the CPBL and I still appreciated all the baseball fans in Taiwan. I gave my all to the TML and the CPBL. 而他問我要不要去當他的隊友，我答應了。A3: I was in the minor leagues with the NY Yankees organization and while there I hurt my elbow and had an elbow surgery. I played a year in Independent ball to get healthy. Then in the US an opportunity to try out for the TML happened. So I tried out. And they said come to Taiwan to play. So my goal was to play in Taiwan and go from Taiwan to Japans NPB.I went from TML to CPBL because my friend Kevin Henthorne played for the Whales and said come to the Whales and play so we can be teammates. I said ok.

Which games is the still impressive now in your memory?A4：在鯨隊的一場比賽讓我印象最深刻。那場比賽我們在臺中球場，而我表定那天休息，因為前幾場比賽我已經連續出賽太多場了。我當時待在牛棚，穿著我的運動鞋與夾克，並沒有穿球衣。但是那場比賽，我們燒光了牛棚，而我是唯一一個還沒上場的投手。當時我們領先，所以教練並不想叫野手登板投球，所以我只好穿上了釘鞋與球衣，並上場投球。當時我根本沒有機會做伸展與妥當的熱身，我只丟了五球，那局就開始了，但我卻投了一個三上三下的半局，並飆出了147KM，那讓我感到很訝異，我居然可以在沒熱身的情況下投得那麼快又那麼好。有許多比賽我都投得很滿意，但那場比賽最讓我印象深刻。A4: One game when I was with the Whales. We were in Taichung and I was to have a day off from pitching because I had pitched in many games in a row. I was in the bullpen in my sneakers and a jacket without my uniform jersey on. But we used all of our pitchers in the game and I was the only pitcher left to pitch. We were winning so the manager didn’t want to use a position player to pitch, so I had to get my spikes and Jersey on and pitch. I didn’t have a chance to stretch and warm up properly. I only had the 5 warm up pitches before the inning was to start. I pitched a 1,2,3 inning and was throwing 147km. That impressed me a lot. I was able to throw fast and pitch great with no warm up. There are many games I remember well and I did well. But that game impressed me a lot.

但只能選一個老朋友會面，你會選誰呢？Q5: If you have a chance to come to Taiwan again but only one old friend you could meet, who you will choose?A5：噢！我不確定。我想大概會是我在臺灣大聯盟的第一個總教練喬治（趙士強）吧。我們仍然是朋友，並且在臉書上保持聯絡。當時和我搭檔的捕手Johnny（王宸浩），至今也和我保持聯絡。我有太多仍然維持聯繫的臺灣前隊友了，我希望能見到他們所有人。A5: Oh I don’t know. I guess my first manager from the TML George. We are still friends and keep in touch over facebook. My catcher Johnny from the Whales we still keep in touch. There are so many former teammates in Taiwan that I still keep in touch with. I would want to see them all.
